About Garolite CNC Machining

Garolite is a phenolic epoxy resin composite reinforced by glass fibre. Due to its thermosetting properties,Garolite cannot be melted and re-formed, and chemical degradation occurs at high temperatures. Therefore, Garolite is not suitable for injection molding, and complex parts can only be produced by CNC machining methods.

Garolite is a high strength, corrosion resistant, insulating epoxy composite material. It is used in ships and other occasions where corrosion resistance is required, and can also be made of circuit board substrate.

Garolite at a Glance

ApplicationTerminal boards, knife handles, jigs and fixtures, engine mountings
AdvantagesInsulating, fire resistant, low maintenance, high strength-to-weight ratio, moisture resistant, dimensionally stable
DisadvantagesProperties break down under prolonged exposure to UV light
Lead TimeLead time is generally a minimum of 3 days. However, this can increase depending on complexity and manufacturing origin.

TolerancesMachining tolerances of 0.005” (0.13mm) are achievable.
Wall ThicknessA minimum wall thickness of 0.03” (0.8mm) is achievable. This can vary depending on the ratio of wall thickness to planar dimension.
Max Part SizeThe maximum size of the part is determined by the machines available and the complexity of the part.

Garolite G-10 (FR4)

Garolite G-10 and G-10 FR4 are suitable for corrosion and humidity environments, commonly found in Marine engineering, and are used in engine components where insulation and mechanical properties are required.

The properties of the two materials are similar,FR4 is the flame retardant grade of G-10, and the flame retardant is better. In most cases, the G-10 FR4 can be used in place of the G-10, but not vice versa

Garolite G11 (FR5)

Garnet G-11(FR5), similar to G-10, is also a glass fiber reinforced epoxy matrix composite. Compared with G-10,G-11 has better thermal insulation performance and can withstand higher operating temperatures. Therefore, the G-11 is particularly suitable for mechanical or electrical applications in high temperature environments.

Finishes

Garnet material is naturally green to yellow-green, and there are also black varieties. Because of its fiber content, garnet is not easy to polish into a smooth finish. Its matte surface is difficult to shine even when polished.

After processing: The processed garnet usually has a smooth matte surface, and the appearance of the part that maintains the processing state will not be affected.

Overspray: If necessary, the uneven surface during the processing can be removed by sandblasting to obtain a uniform matte appearance.

Cost-saving Design Tips

Garolite is a higher priced engineering plastic, so it is necessary to control its manufacturing costs.

The main cost control measures are:

  1. The existing standard inventory size is given priority in the design, which can minimize the waste of raw materials.
  2. Reduce the processing amount, the processing of Garolite requires the use of expensive diamond or superalloy tools, and the processing cost is high.
  3. Simplify the processing technology, avoid unnecessary processes, in order to reduce processing time and cost.
