About Garolite CNC Machining

Garolite A thermosetting composite material made of glass fibre and phenolic epoxy resin. As a thermosetting substance,Garolite cannot be melted or converted. If it is heated above its maximum operating temperature, it will chemically decompose and can no longer maintain its properties once cooled. This makes Garolite injection molding impossible. Garolite’s CNC machining is the only way to manufacture complex parts.

Garolite is a glass-reinforced epoxy composite material with a high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent corrosion and moisture resistance making it ideal for space components.

Garolite at a Glance

ApplicationTerminal boards, knife handles, jigs and fixtures, engine mountings
AdvantagesInsulating, fire resistant, low maintenance, high strength-to-weight ratio, moisture resistant, dimensionally stable
DisadvantagesProperties break down under prolonged exposure to UV light
Lead TimeLead time is generally a minimum of 3 days. However, this can increase depending on complexity and manufacturing origin.
Price$$$
TolerancesMachining tolerances of 0.005” (0.13mm) are achievable.
Wall ThicknessA minimum wall thickness of 0.03” (0.8mm) is achievable. This can vary depending on the ratio of wall thickness to planar dimension.
Max Part SizeThe maximum size of the part is determined by the machines available and the complexity of the part.

Garolite G-10 (FR4)

Garolite G-10(FR4) CNC machining parts are ideal for corrosive or high humidity applications. Typically, a combination of these environmental conditions is found in the Marine industry, where Garolite is used for engine components such as mounting brackets and applications requiring electrical insulation and mechanical strength.

Garolite G11 (FR5)

Similar to G-10,Garolite G-11(FR5) is a glass epoxy laminate material. The G11 has better insulation than the G10, so it can withstand higher operating temperatures. This makes it ideal for space or electrical applications in high temperature environments.

Finishes

PEEK parts are naturally opaque gray or beige, and are usually machined due to their inherent chemical resistance.

Machinability :PEEK is easy to process, and the surface roughness can be comparable to 125 μRa roughness.

Sand blowing: Any unwanted tool marks can be removed by mechanically blowing the sand surface with glass beads.

Cost-saving Design Tips

Garolite is usually a green to yellow-green material, but black is also available.

After forming: The processed Garolite usually has a smooth matte surface. This means that the pieces that remain in the processed state will not affect the aesthetics.

Blowing sand: Parts manufactured with Garolite can be blown sand to remove any uneven surfaces created during processing.
