Heading

Cold heading is a kind of metal working process which combines forging, extrusion and spinning. It is usually carried out in a cold state, resulting in a cold working effect. This process results in a work piece that is close to the final shape, meaning that the final product is basically complete, sometimes with simple electroplating or heat treatment.

An important consideration of cold heading is the deformation of the billet caused by too large aspect ratio. This ratio is usually kept below 3:1, but it can be increased with the proper mold. There are many kinds of cold heading machine, but it is often used in fastener production. It can be seen from one - die two - stroke to five - die six - stroke and above models. Due to the limited diameter ratio, multi-die models can produce more complex parts in a single process.
