Near-clean forging

The near clean forging represents the latest development of the traditional die forging process. Near-clean forgings have more complex geometric features, different parting line positions, almost no drawing modulus, smaller dimensional tolerances and higher surface quality. These benefits include reduced machining operations, lighter weight and lower raw material and energy costs. In many cases, only connecting holes are drilled for machining.

The production cost of near-clean forgings is usually higher than that of traditional forgings under forging and heat treatment. They are not necessarily glitterless. Because of the elimination of post-forging machining, the cost advantage is transferred to near-clean forging. A study of the cost of producing aircraft aluminium forgings by four processes (hand forging, block forging, conventional forging and near-clear forging) identifies the cost drivers and illustrates the trade-offs.
