Free die forging
Open die forging is the process of deforming metal blocks between incomplete closed dies. When the mold is applied to the material through a series of "hammering" or "squeezing" movements, the metal deforms until the desired shape is achieved. Products formed by open forging usually require secondary machining and finishing to meet dimensional tolerances of the final product.
Open die forging is widely used to produce simple products in small batches, rather than complex products such as discs, rings, sleeves, tubes, etc. Custom shaped products can also be produced by open die forging. Another advantage of open die forging is that it can improve the fatigue strength of the product, since the strength of the grain structure of the billet increases during repeated processing. In addition, open die forging can effectively reduce the cavity inside the product.
