Electric Discharge Machining (EDM)
Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a non-contact machining method which uses the heat energy of electric discharge to melt the metal surface of workpiece to achieve the purpose of machining. In EDM processing, there is no mechanical contact between the workpiece and the electrode, and the electric spark jumps between the two, resulting in high temperature to melt the workpiece surface, so as to achieve the purpose of cutting, modifying and so on.
The main advantages of EDM processing are:
1. Non-contact processing. There is no mechanical contact between the workpiece and the electrode, no cutting force, no stress distortion, especially suitable for processing hard and brittle materials and complex shape of the workpiece.
2. High dimensional accuracy. No mechanical contact, not affected by tool and equipment stiffness, can achieve high accuracy, usually within 0.01mm.
3. Good surface quality. The machining surface is smooth without scratches, and the surface roughness can reach Ra0.4μm.
4. High production efficiency. Automatic device, high processing efficiency, can be continuous automatic processing, without stopping tool change and measurement.
5. Flexible variation. Can process any shape of the workpiece, in the complex surface and space processing has a unique advantage.
